Embracing Imperfection: Recognizing the beauty and strength in embracing imperfections and letting go of the pursuit of perfection.
I would like to speak to you honestly about something that has been on my mind recently: Imperfection. Being imperfect includes all of our flaws, inaccuracies and shortcomings, which are fundamental to being human. It is the antithesis of perfection, marked by the lack of flaws or inadequacies. Rather than aiming for an impossibly high goal of perfection, embracing imperfection entails recognizing and appreciating these fundamental human limits.
In a world where flawlessly maintained feeds and perfect selfies are most important, it's easy to feel like we're never quite living up. However, what if I told you that true beauty can be found in imperfections? Imagine yourself browsing social media and being overwhelmed with pictures of people who seem to have it all. The problem is that such pictures aren't real. These are well chosen and flawlessly polished details. Comparing oneself to a highlight reel and ignoring the behind-the-scenes blunders is the same.
Honestly, there once was a perfectionist in me. I used to spend hours retouching pictures in an attempt to get the illusive perfect appearance. However, I came to the realization one day, that our flaws are what define us as human. They share our story with them, revealing to the world our true selves—unvarnished, unapologetically flawed, and gorgeously imperfect.
I've discovered that genuine connections, not flawless ones, are the most significant. We invite others to do the same when we lower our guard and reveal our genuine selves, warts and all. It's similar to creating a stronger and more sincere friendship based on acceptance and understanding of one another's imperfections.
Effects on mental health:
Accepting imperfections can have a profound effect on mental health, both positively and negatively. Positively, stress and anxiety levels might go down when you embrace imperfection. We relieve ourselves of the weight of our own unreasonable expectations when we let go of the incessant need to be flawless. We can learn to accept our imperfections as a necessary component of what makes us special and human, which can lead to more self-compassion and self-esteem.
But the focus society places on perfection can also be detrimental to one's mental health. Feeling inadequate and poor in self-worth can result from constantly comparing oneself to others and setting impossible expectations for ourselves. Depression can also be major result from this. These emotions can be made worse by social media in particular, as we are constantly exposed to well chosen pictures that don't really depict reality.
